The heart of overseas Vietnamese artist Hoang Lan for the homeland

In the morning of July 24, 2017, through the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, Mr. Bui Thanh Tung, the husband of overseas Vietnamese artist Hoang Lan and a former Secretary General of the Vietnamese Association in France, gave musical documentation of late artist Hoang Lan to the Conservatory of Music of Ho Chi Minh City.

The documentation consists of about 100 books, 35% of which are classical European music and a piano. Receiving this precious materials from the relative of artist Hoang Lan, Associate Prof. Dr. Ta Quang Dong, the director of the HCMC Conservatory of Music was touched saying, "Besides the practical meaning to the teaching and supplementing the knowledge for the students of the Conservatory, this noble deed also shows the hearts of Vietnamese who live away but always have their love for their origin. We really appreciate the heart of artist Hoang Lan and her family.

Artist Hoang Lan was born and raised in Vung Tau City, Vietnam. At the age of 12, she followed her parents to come to France. She graduated from the Paris School of Music in the School of Vocal and Performing Arts.

Since a student, Hoang Lan had a passionate interest in studying classical European music. She made much effort to collect many arias, lieder, and opéra of many countries. However, Vietnamese music can be irreplaceable in her heart. Therefore, although living abroad, she still spent time exploring the forms of folk songs, ancient songs, songs of Vietnam. During the performance, artist Hoang Lan was skillful to combine European music and Vietnamese folk, which was praised by her friends in France as well as over the world.

Hoang Lan was quite familiar to Vietnamese French in France as she always attended and served music for the community during (Tet) holidays. During the negotiation phase of the Paris Agreement, she was awarded the Certificate of Merit against the Americans by the Prime Minister for participating in the movements for the struggle for peace, independence and unification of the overseas Vietnamese in France.

In addition to participating in the association, Hoang Lan also held her own concerts with two parts of European classical music and Vietnamese songs. In particular, Hoang Lan was honored to perform twice in Vietnam in 1994 and 1998 at the HCMC Conservatory of Music with a private concert organized by the Overseas Vietnamese Committee in HCMC in collaboration with the HCMC Conservatory of Music.

Before she died, artist Hoang Lan asked her relatives to bring the materials, books, and music that were always with her to the students of the Conservatory of Ho Chi Minh City, who really need and love her legacy.
