Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Lệ: The Confidence in the Human Resources of Viet Nam

Given half of his life living and working overseas and more than 15 years engaging in the IT sector of Viet Nam, Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Lệ, a Canadian of Vietnamese origin, is considered to be the pioneer in Viet Nam’s software outsourcing.

He went to study in Australia and got his Bachelor’s Degree in electronics in 1962. In 1977, he switched to IT and earned a Doctoral Degree in telecommunications from Adelaide University (Australia). In 1978, he started working as a technician for Nortel (Canada), one of the world’s leading telecom corporations. 15 years later, he became the Vice President for Global Marketing of Nortel. In 2000, he served as the Director General of Paragon Solutions Asia Pacific, in charge of Paragon Solutions Vietnam (PSV) and Paragon Solutions India.

In 2001, he joined TMA Solutions, a private software outsourcing company with clients being the world’s leading telecommunication giants.  Previously, he assisted TMA in developing its model, providing consultation in marketing and developing business. Currently, TMA has become the leading software company of  Viet Nam with 6 domestic offices and 4 overseas branches in Canada, U.S., Australia and Japan, with 1800 engineers.

With more than 15 years engaging in the IT sector of Viet Nam, currently, Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Lệ is taking on the role of training high-quality human resources in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as other localities in Viet Nam. Talking to us, Dr. Lệ expressed his dedication to making the world see Viet Nam as a trustworthy destination for software outsourcing. He believed that human resource training was crucial in achieving this goal. Therefore, TMA was having a staff of dedication and a high degree of skill. He believed that the human resources of Viet Nam were comparable to those in the world, as evidenced by the fact that more than 40% of the TMA’s staff was highly appreciated by global hi-tech giants. Mr. Lệ attributed the success of TMA to the three following factors, namely: human, organizational and managerial experience and biculturalism. Therefore, the building of a bi-cultural environment had always been the important focus at TMA. As TMA was an outsourcing company, our staff met many big clients. To be successful, our staff was required to understand well the bi-cultural environment, i.e. both their culture and that of the clients – like the teaching “Knowing both yourself and others is the key to success”.

What surprised us most on our visit to TMA was the various collections by Mr. Nguyễn Hữu Lệ on display. He displayed a lot of artifacts associated with the countryside of Viet Nam, the Central Highlands Gong Culture, particularly the land of Bình Định where he was born. Besides, he also owned a library with all kinds of  books, especially those about Trường Sa and Hoàng Sa Archipelagos. He shared that, at the display room and the library, he introduced the country and the people of Viet Nam to friends, particularly the foreign partners.

Let’s hope that in the coming time, given the hard work and dedication by Dr. Nguyễn Hữu Lệ and his dynamic team at TMA, the position of Viet Nam’s software outsourcing will be further promoted globally.
